Electricity coming from a central generation plant (even if from coal) is many times more efficient and clean than burning gas in a small internal combustion engine. Besides, most people charge at night when there's usually a surplus of power in the grid anyway.
As a mechanic friend put it to me, if you were to design a machine who's sole purpose was to create maximum pollution, the engine in each of our cars would be a really good design.
And another nice benefit of electric cars is that they leave open the possibility for alternative energy sources. Heard of any viable alternative energy sources for internal combustion engines lately?

No quality control at all and parts are usually almost impossible to find. In other words it might be cheap (inexpensive) but stay away from chinese stuff if at all possible.
