[Silly Little Cars] Silly_little_cars Digest, Vol 53, Issue 1

Alec, it was *you who told me to post to this list to ask for mechs* a few days ago! ..and you knew I'd had a bad experience w/Jerry when you said that. Now you're reversing?!  WTF?

Also, you got almost every fact wrong:

1) You were *not* there. When he and I talked in person, there was no one. Eavesdropped a phone convo on his end? maybe, but you heard none of mine.

2) "all wires and hoses are melted" also not factual. much heat damage at front of engine, yes -and none anywhere else. fun-fur seat cover 6" above the small fire was only affected in one small corner.
An ex-pro safety-freak fire worker, I had a fire extinguisher & had fire out w/in about 20 secs of bringing vehicle to a stop.

3) I never balked at anything - until now, after finding he'd doubled the price of the part after putting me off for *three months* (though I told him I needed my work-transport back!)
The week before the fire, I'd just put $500 in it -new windshield, new tires all around, a solar panel, fixed bumper, other stuff.
I didn't need to store a car, I needed my car!

4) If he "didn't want to work on it", then he should have SAID so. He never did. Instead he strung me along, kept trying to pick off a car, cheap - and got annoyed when I wouldn't sell - while I lost income waiting for him to do what he said he was going to do.

5) my one-sentence statement was very minimal, only enough to tell SLC owners be careful. Maybe I should've left it generic "bad experience". But, is that not part of what this list is supposed to be for?  to make recommendations? If not here, then *where can we*?

Fact is, even today I tried *not* to publicly trash him! (as you'll see when you read the info below that I'd left out). But since you have -for reasons unknown- suddenly chosen to turn on a friend of 15 years and publicly trash me *after sending me to this list yourself* you've backed me into a corner and forced me to defend myself.

6) mechanic timeline:

June 18 at 11 pm, brought Cushman to street outside shop. He asked me to take it into the yard, which I did.

On phone June 19, noon, he said it was going to be very expensive -but wouldn't give even a ballpark guesstimate- then said he would "take it off my hands". When I replied that its not for sale, I definitely wanted to fix it if possible, he put me off. It was clearly not the answer he wanted.

He called afternoon about June 24, again tried to talk me into selling it to him with vague talk of how expensive it would be to fix, but after I again refused, he said he'd find a timing belt locally so a compression test could be done, and then he'd call me to let me know what it costs. I said "ok, yes, please do". I even turned away another mech who offered to go over there to do the test, because I had already given approval for Jerry to do it.

Then I waited. and waited. and waited. While I lost business because I lacked transportation (can't carry tools on MUNI) - which I had carefully explained to him.

When he finally called in 3rd week in July, he acted as if we'd never talked - as if he hadn't said he'd find a belt and call me, and I hadn't given my approval.  He was rude and scolding.
When I asked whether he had found a belt as he said he would, he back-pedaled a bit, then finally treated this was a new directive, and again said he would get the belt and call me.

He didn't call again until October 1st, at noon.

When he did finally call, considering the long delays and his claim to not remember previous convos, I asked for his estimate in writing, but he refused.
He quoted 180$ for labor to put on a belt and compression-test 3 cylinders, and said he could only get the belt in a 200$ kit.

The supplier (theres only one), Ron at DirectParts, never mentioned a kit to me, but quoted the timing belt at $71.44.

On Oct 10, mid-day, he called, saying he would put it back on the street for me to pick up. When I asked about street cleaning, he made a veiled threat that it would probably be towed if it was on the street more than a day or so.

7) He evidently hoped I'd balk at the scare-pricing and the delay, so he could pick up a Cushman on the cheap. And now he's got you, Alec, helping him - publicly cutting me off from other mechanics so I'll have no choice but to deal with him. straight-up horse-thievery. and now you've made yourself a party to it, Alec.

8) Despite all, I've been *extremely* patient, never anything but polite to Jerry.  I have certainly never been abusive to him in any imaginable fashion, and you have absolutely no basis on which to acuse me of this. I've never so much as looked at him funny.

If other folks have other experiences, I'm not fool enough argue something I did not see.
Perhaps he shows a different side to different people. I can only wonder, for example, why he apparently helped Precious Roy while he kept me waiting - even though I was there *much* sooner...
I've never exchanged cross words with Jerry, kinda liked him, he seemed to know what he's doing. I don't know why this happened. But I did keep notes, and the above are the facts.

I was at his shop when you two were talking.

He's been nothing but nice to you. You brought him a burned up Cushman (literally: the thing caught fire, the engine is charred, all wires and hoses are melted), and he was nice enough to say he'd take a look at it. He told you it would be expensive, you balked, so he very understandably didn't want to work on it. Now he's been storing it for you for at least 3 months without you even offering to give him some money. Ever. You've never given him a cent, you just call and abuse him on the phone.

And then you publicly trash him?

Seriously????

For the other people reading this, John Voldol has a long history of screwing over people in his community. He lived in an artist space in San Francisco run by the nicest person you could imagine (Skot Kyper) and by the end of it John wasn't paying rent, was threatening to have him busted for code violations (code violations!!!), and eventually took out a restraining order against him. The entire space was almost disbanded.

I'd advise any mechanic to steer clear of him, dealing with him appears to be a guaranteed headache or worse.
