[Silly Little Cars] New 2009 California 3 wheel motorcycle laws

How about a guy like me who takes the top off in summer and puts it back on in winter. Gotta re-register every time from car/mc/car/mc/etc.

Fortunately I live in Oregon.

Unfortunately California's goofy laws seem to migrate north.

the problem with this assessment is weather they choose to keep the non motorcycle classification for cushmans and interceptors after they leave public service. it is really a matter of interpretation, but i dont think the intention is for these vehicles to be considered motorcycles any more. actually, after reading these new laws, i am convinced that fully enclosed 3 wheel vehicles are now definitely considered cars and not motorcycles, but can be used in hov lanes. i believe, as i think the nice people in sacramento believe, that the new law is designed to make these cars in this state. this means that they must be taken to the referee station to get permanent smog exemption. this does not mean that there are some dmv agents who will do the motorcycle change over, but i think this will become harder as time goes on and will actually make some of us go through way more hassle. my suggestion is to just go get the exemption and be done with the thing.

    Hi Jack,

Let me know what you find. I went to the DMV website and found 1 thing - Assembly Bill 2272 by Fuentes changes a few things about 3 wheeled motorcycles. See this link @ DMV:

    http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/newsrel/newsrel08/2008-37.htm

An analysis of the bill is here:
    http://info.sen.ca.gov/pub/07-08/bill/asm/ab_2251-2300/ab_2272_cfa_20080624_140808_sen_floor.html

The actual section of the California Vehicle Code that is changed is here:
    http://info.sen.ca.gov/pub/07-08/bill/asm/ab_2251-2300/ab_2272_bill_20080221_introduced.html

The good news is that if this is the only way the law has changed then we can still register our Interceptors as motorcycles. Infact we have to! It allows us to use HOV lanes we couldn't use before. His analysis also clarifies a few things - you do need a seatbelt, and don't need a helmet. It's pretty clear this law change was prompted by the Aptera electric car - to allow them to use HOV lanes - it also removed the weight limit that they are going to bust.

      Hi Simon,
By Thursday of this week I should know if I have gotten all the correct information. That is when I have another DMV appointment to complete the reg process on my Interceptor. I will let you know when I have completed the process.

         Hi Jack,

Dan tells me you got some information that the 3 wheeled vehicles in
California are no longer motorcycles this year - where did you get
         the
info and what exactly did you find out? This has big implication
         for all
us Cushman and Interceptor owners, and I have a reservation for a 3
wheeled electric vehicle (The Aptera) - this change would be very
significant for these (it would mean they are eligible for federal
         tax
rebates, but would have to meet auto standards).
